Tom Downey:

All   Greater Rochester player while at Dansville (’69 and ’70). Built an impressive   coaching record at Canisteo, Dansville and Livonia of 437-154.Won nine   Section V Coach of the Year Awards. Following his untimely death, the Birkett   Mills Coach of the Year Award was named after him. Livonia’s gymnasium now   bears his name.

 

Larry Horgan:

Won 10 league titles and six Section V Titles during his 16-year coaching career.   Total coaching record at two schools is 298-64. Has been named Section V   Coach of the Year seven times, and has taken his team to the NYSPHSAA Final   Four twice.

 

Marv Skillman:

A much loved physical education and health teacher and athletic director at Avoca Central for 33 years, and coached the men’s basketball team for 26 years, building a highly respectable   career coaching record of 368-182, including one year at Hammpondsport. He played his high school basketball at Canisteo, where he held the school record of 37 points in a single game, a record that was broken in a game   coached by Marv at Canisteo. He was the All-Greater Rochester Coach of the   Year in 1990. His Tigers won three consecutive Section V Championships; one in Class C (1987,) and back-to-back Class D Crowns in 1998 and 1999. The team also won the NYSPHSAA Championship in Class D in 1989.

  

Jack Guinan

Coached teams to six Section V Basketball Championships, including five in a row   (1970-1974). Overall coaching record was 307-73. Won League Coach of the Year   Award six times; four-time Section V Coach of the Year. Also coached girls’   basketball (113-58).


Players

  

Sam Gray

Played at Rochester East High (’65-’69), and was a member of three Orientals championship teams (’66, ’67, ’69). He was named to four consecutive Class AAA All-Tournament teams (1966-1969), and was the MVP of the annual tournament twice (’67, ’69). In addition to his Section V honors, he was named All City all four years he played at East, and was a member of the   Inaugural All Greater Rochester team in 1969.

 

Mike Brown

Member of two Section V Championship teams at Wilson Magnet (1985, 1986) NYSPHSAA  semifinalist,1985, NYSPHSAA Championship team, 1986. Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester Team,1985 and1986.

 

Kevin Downey

As the point guard at Livonia, scored a school record 1,647 points. Three-time Section V Tourney All-Tournament, MVP in 2001. Holds school record for most points/season (611). Two-time All Greater Rochester Team selection. Played at Division I Canisius College.

 

Jill Hammond:

Three-time recipient of All Greater Rochester Honors (’98, ’99, ’00). Named NYSPHSAA First Team All-State (2000). Class C NYSPHSAA Tournament MVP. Named to Section V All Tournament Teams three times, (’98, ’99, ’00), gaining MVP honors in 1999.

 

Caitlin Howe:

Probably the most highly touted and recruited female athlete in Section V. Started her Varsity career while in junior high, and gained honors immediately. She was a five time All-Tournament selection, and appeared on the AGR team four times. Duke won the recruiting war.

 

Beth Anne (Bradshaw) Portee:

Played for Mynderse Academy (1989-1993), where she scored 1000 points and became the school’s first Division I scholarship winner. She was named to the Section V All-Tournament Team twice (’92, ’93) before taking her talents to Villanova University.

 

James Reaves

Was named to the All Greater Rochester Team in 1999 and 2000, and was named   Player of the Year in 2000. He was a member of the Inventors squads which won back-to-back championships in 1998 and 1999. Went on to play college ball at Niagara University before returning to Rochester to play a major role in winning the first ever ABA championship for the Razorsharks in 2006, averaging 25 points and 17 rebounds a game, leading the team in both categories.



Officials / Referees

  

Bob Parker

Bob was the force in the Middle while playing at Eastridge High before landing a spot on the Syracuse Orangemen varsity. He was a member of the Orange team to make it to the Final Four in 1975. A highly respected and rated official of IAABO Board 60, he was selected Official of the Year in 2001, and gave his time as Game Coordinator for the Ronald McDonald All-Star Basketball Game.



Media

  

Gary Smith


Played in Section V competition while a student at Pittsford (1953-1955) before  attending Syracuse University. Had a distinguished radio career until his retirement in 2006.Was instrumental in promoting Section V and announcing Tournament games on WVET, then WROC from 1960-1974.
