Class of 2008:

  

Ted Bondi - Geneseo Central - Coach/Administrator

.....Excelled as an athlete, coach   and administrator. At Brockport State in the late 40's, he was a Division I   four-year All American in soccer as well as a member of the basketball,   baseball and swimming teams. While coaching at Geneseo High School, his teams   won 3 sectional titles, nine county titles in a seventeen year span. As a   Section V, he has served as President, Executive Secretary, Treasurer as well   as serving on committees for soccer, basketball, wrestling, skiing, baseball   and bowling, and others. He has been a Section V officer since 1956 and   continues today as a leader on both the sectional and state level.


Gene Johnson - Greece Central - Administrator

…Gene made positive contributions to Section V basketball in a variety of roles. He coached basketball at both Greece Olympia and Greece Arcadia and served as the Monroe County Chairman.   As a member of the Section V Basketball Committee in 1978, was instrumental in the reestablishment of the New York State Public School Championship.   Served as Section V Basketball Chairman from 1981-1990 and State Chairman from 1985-1990. Currently serves on the Section V and NYSPHAA Football Committees. Gene’s service to youth has been recognized as recipient of the Mark Vienna Memorial Service Award, the McDonald’s Community Service Award the Greece Athletics Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Rochester IAABO Board 60 Award
 

Jamie Burke - Prattsburgh Central - Player

…..Playing for her father Jim,   enjoyed a brilliant six year career. Second leading scorer in Section V   history with 2,458 points (14th all time in NYS). She led Prattsburgh Central   to three Section V titles. Named to AGR First Team 1992 and 1993 and earned   First Team All State honors in 1994. Jamie was the Democrat and Chronicle   Female Athlete of the Year for the 1992-93 school year. She also garnered   national recognition as she was named to the USA today Girl’s Honorable   Mention Team in 1993. She is currently the Head Softball and Soccer Coach at   Keuka College.

 

Jim Burke - Prattsburgh Central - Men’s and Women’s Coach

….. This coaching icon has been a   model of success in both boy’s and girl’s basketball. Jim has amassed 676   wins (499 boys, 177 girls) and has directed Prattsbugh Central to 6 Boys and   4 Girls Section V titles. His 1991 Boys team netted the NY State championship   with an unblemished 29-0 record. He was honored by the Rochester D&C in   1991 as their AGR “Coach of the Year.” Coach Burke is also a member of the   New York State Basketball Coaches and Wayland-Cohocton Halls of Fame.
 

Ivan Cranmer - Board 156/Stueben County - Official

…..Ivan has served as an IAABO   varsity official in 1966. He has been NYS Board #156 Interpreter of Rules for   the past 35 years. He served as President of this Board 1975 - 1977 and 1982   - 1984. He officiated many Section V finals, Regional finals, and the NYS   finals in Glens Falls in 1992. He received the Fenner - Nadeau Award in 1988   for service & dedication to Steuben County Athletics. He was honored as   #1 official on his local board a number of times throughout his officiating   career. Based on Ivan's years of dedication and accomplishments as an   official he was selected to receive Life Membership in the International   Association of Approved Basketball Officials (IAABO). This is a national   honor and is one of the highest honors an official can obtain.
 

Mitch Harris - Rochester Wilson Magnet School - Player

….Member and captain of the powerhouse Wilson Magnet teams of the mid 80’s, led team to two Section V titles (1984,1985) while being named tournament MVP in 1985. A two time state finalist Harris helped Wilson Magnet capture the 1985 NYSPHAA title while earning All Tournament honors.

 

Maggie Herko-Webb - East Rochester High School - Player

…. Lead East Rochester to four consecutive Section V Championships (1989-1992). She amassed over 1000 points and 1000 rebounds in her career. Maggie was a three-time All Monroe County and All Greater Rochester performer. Upon graduation from ER, she continued   her career at Nazareth College. 

 

Leo Johnson - Alfred-Almond Central - Player

….A graduate of Alfred-Almond Central in 1946, Leo Johnson was a four sport athlete earning All County and Section V honors in baseball and basketball. In leading Alfred-Almond to the 1946 Section V title he established the single game and two game scoring records with 35 points in the semi-finals and 38 points in the finals of the tournament. These marks stood as Section V records for 30 years.

Gene Monje - Rush Henrietta Central - Men’s Coach / Official

….Earned accolades as three sport star at both Franklin High School and Ithaca College. Coached Rush Henrietta to two Section V titles (1972,1976) amassing a career record of 286-125.   Officiated on both the high school and college level and was honored by selection to officiate14 consecutive NCAA tournaments including the Final Four in 1993 and 1995.Also a recipient of the Press Radio Club’s Elliot   Cushing Award and the Frontier Field Walk of Fame.
 

Katie Murphy - Greece Athena High School - Player

….Began stellar career as an eighth grader leading Athena to the Class A Section V championship (1995).  A two–time Monroe County Player of the Year(1998,1999) and All Greater Rochester selection (1998, 1999).  A do it all point guard is the Athena career leader in steals and assists while adding 1, career points.  Attended Niagara University on scholarship and now serves as an assistant women’s   basketball coach at her alma mater.
 

Charles Palmer - Rochester School for the Deaf - Player

….Versatile guard capable of playing multiple positions, recognized by the NYSPHAA as the All Time Career scoring leader in New York State with 2,875 points. Led his team to three Eastern School for the Deaf (ESDAA) Championships (1999, 2001, 2002). Named MVP of the 2002 Tournament following a 54 point outburst in the championship game. Three time Deaf All-American (2000, 2001, and 2002). All Greater Rochester selection, 2nd team, in 2002. Played for the Division III  RIT Tigers in 2003. 

 

Kara Rodger Roberts - Waterloo Central - Player

…A member of 3 consecutive Section V champions at Waterloo High School (1992, 1993, and 1994) earning All   Tournament honors each year. Kara amassed over 1700 points in her career.   Kara was a three time All Greater Rochester selection (1992, 1993, and 1994).   In 1993 she participated in the 1993 Empire State Games and the World Scholar Games. Upon completion of her scholastic career Kara attended St Bonaventure University where she captained the women’s softball team.
 

Heathar Shepard - Bloomfield Central - Player

….One of the most successful players in Section V girl’s basketball history. Lead Bloomfield Central to four consecutive Section V Class C titles (1998-2001) along with four West regional championships and two NYSPHAA titles (1999, 2000). Earned Class C All State First Team honors twice (1999, 2001) and was named MVP of the 1999 NYSPHAA tournament. Holds state record for career 3 point field goals made with 277.
 

Jeff Van Gundy - Brockport Central - Player/Coach

….A two-time All Greater Rochester selection in 1979 and 1980 led Brockport Central to the Class AA finals. Jeff continued his career at Nazareth College where he earned All American honors while leading the Golden Flyers to an NCAA Tournament berth in 1984. He   remains the Nazareth career leader in free throw percentage at 87%. Jeff   began his prep coaching career at McQuaid Jesuit. From there he moved on to Providence College where he assisted Rick Pitino in leading the Friars to the NCAA Final Four. Jeff amassed over 400 wins in an eleven year NBA coaching  career with stints as the head coach of the New York Knicks and the Houston Rockets. He currently serves as an analyst for ABC- ESPN telecasts of NBA games.
