The class of 2012 features 10 people who have earned distinction through playing, coaching, officiating and leadership during the past 88 years of scholastic competition in Section V Basketball.

Class of 2012:
Becky Ayers (Larson)  Canandaigua Academy  Player

Becky Ayers (Larson) – A 2001   graduate of Canandaigua Academy, Becky tallied 2,059 career points, which ranks 12th all-time in Section V history. Becky led the Braves to three Finger Lakes East titles and the Section V Class A Championship in 2000. She was a four-time Finger Lakes East All-Star, a three- time AGR selection (1999, 2000 and 2001). Becky was a three-time member of the Section V   All-Tournament Team, including Tournament Most Valuable Player in 2000.
 

Tom Batzold  Rochester Democrat & Chronicle   Media

Tom Batzold – Tom was the Sports Editor for the Democrat & Chronicle and had a passion for Section V basketball. Tom worked tirelessly through his media position to advocate for local high school athletes. He was the driving force behind the All-Greater Rochester distinction process. Upon retirement, Tom served as an assistant coach in the Irondequoit High School program. The Irondequoit Holiday Basketball

Tournament is named in Tom’s memory.
 

Carvin Blocker  Brockport Central  Player

Carvin Blocker – A dominating inside presence, Carvin was a three year starter at Brockport Central. As a senior he and teammate Jeff Van Gundy propelled the Blue Devils to an undefeated regular season and a berth in the 1978 Section V Class AA Finals.  Carvin earned First Team All-Monroe County and First Team AGR honors along the way.


Liz Brown  Marcus Whitman Central  Player

Liz Brown (Royston) – A 1996 graduate of Marcus Whitman, Liz carried the Wildcats to back to back Section V Class CCC Championships and NYSPHSAA Tournament Final Four berths (1995 and 1996). She holds school career records for points (1730), assists (377) and   steals (513). Liz was a two-time AGR First Team selection (1995 and 1996) and a two-time Section V Class CCC Tournament Most Valuable Player (1995 and 1996).


Dino Page  Rochester Monroe H.S.  Player

Dino Page – Dino was a multi-sport star at Rochester Monroe High School. He earned All-City recognition in football, basketball and track. In 1969, he led the formidable Red Jacket quintet in both scoring and rebounding. Upon graduation he starred for two seasons at Monroe Community College.
 

Larry Trippodo  Board 60 IAABO Official   

Larry Trippodo – A premier referee in Section V, Larry officiating career extended from 1974 -2001. In that time he established an unparalleled standard of excellence. Larry was named Board 60 Official of the Year in 1995 and Basketball Coaches Association of New   York (BCANY) Official of the Year in 1998. He officiated in multiple Section V, Western Regional and NYSPHSAA Finals. Larry is a 2007 Section V Football Hall of Fame inductee in recognition of his work as a referee. He is an active volunteer in the community and has been recognized for his tireless contributions by the Ronald McDonald House, Camp Good Days and Special Times, and the Center for Youth.
 

Andrew Verkey  Mynderse Academy  Player

Andrew Verkey – A pure shooter,   Andrew scored over 1400 points in his career at Mynderse Academy. Andrew led the Blue Devils to the 1996 Section V Class CCC Championship in 1996 earning  tournament Most Valuable Player honors along the way. He was a two-time AGR First Team honoree (1996, 1997) and was named to the All-NY State second team as a senior.
 

Rod Verkey  Lyons Central Coach /   Administrator

Rod Verkey – Rod was the longtime basketball coach and Athletic Director at Lyons Central. He coached the Lions basketball squads from 1974-1981, posting a career record of 128-29 (82% winning %). His teams appeared in 5 Section V Championship games, capturing   back to back titles in 1980 and 1981. His 1980 Lyons contingent won the NYSPHSAA Class C Championship. Rod is a three-time Section V Coach of the Year (1975,1978, and 1981). He is also a member of the Section V Football Hall of Fame (2004). He has served on the Section V Basketball Committee as the Wayne County representative for 34 years.
 

Laurie Vienne (Reed)  Pittsford Mendon H.S.  Player

Laurie Vienne (Reed) – A   three-sport standout at Pittsford Mendon High School, Laurie was selected   All-Monroe County First Team in soccer, basketball and softball in both her junior and senior years. On the hardwood, she was selected to the AGR First Team in 1982 as well as the Section V Class A All-Tournament Team. Laurie was honored as the Rochester Press-Radio Club Sportswoman of the Year in 1982.
 

Phil White  Bloomfield Central  Coach

Phil White - Amassed 397 career wins at the helm of the Bloomfield girls program. His teams captured 13 Finger Lakes League Titles and 9 Section V Class C Championships. Phil guided his Bomber squads to 5 Western Regional titles and 4 consecutive NYSPHSAA   Final Four berths. His 1999 and 2000 Bloomfield teams secured NYSPHSAA State Championships. Phil was honored as AGR Coach of the Year in 2000 and NYSPHSAA   Coach of the Year in 2001. He was a 9-time recipient of the Kodak Coach of the Year Award.
