The Class of 2014 presents 14 people who have earned distinction through playing, coaching, officiating and leadership during the past 94 years of scholastic competition in Section V Basketball.

Class of 2014:

Becky Ayers (Larson)  Canandaigua Academy  Player

Becky   Ayers (Larson) – A 2001 graduate of Canandaigua Academy, Becky tallied 2,059 career points, which ranks12th all-time in Section V history. Becky led the Braves to three Finger Lakes East titles and the Section V Class A Championship in 2000. She was a four-time Finger Lakes East All-Star, a three- time AGR selection (1999, 2000 and 2001). Becky was a three-time member of the Section V All-Tournament Team, including Tournament Most Valuable Player in 2000.
 

Maddy Brown  Honeoye Falls-Lima Central  Player

One of the most decorated players in Section V history. As a senior in 2005 Maddy was honored as the Livingston County League, All-Greater Rochester and New York State Class A Player of the Year. Maddy scored 2017 points in her career. She led the Cougars to back to back NYSPHSAA Championship Game appearances in 2004 and 2005, capturing the crown in 2005. Played Division I Basketball at the University of Pittsburgh and Texas Tech University.
 

Jim Cady  Madison High School  Player

Jim was the leading scorer for the Madison High School undefeated City-Catholic League Champions of 1951 and 1952. He earned All-Scholastic honors each season. The 1951 Madison squad captured the Section V Class AA Championship.
 

Stuart Downing  Fairport Central High School  Player

A 1991 graduate of Fairport High School, Stuart ranks 2nd all-time in Red Raider history with 1159 points. He was a two-time All-Greater Rochester selection (1990 &1991). Played Division I Basketball at Siena College where he earned Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Academic Team honors for 3 consecutive years. He was twice recognized as the Siena College Defensive Player of the Year (1992, 1994). Stuart was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 1991. He received his law degree from Georgetown University in 2000.
 

David Everett   Edison Tech High School   Player  

A 1971 graduate of Edison Tech, David was the leading scorer in the Rochester City–Catholic League and an All-Greater selection his senior year. David was awarded a scholarship to Grand Canyon University where he guided the Antelopes to the 1975 NAIA National Championship. He earned NAIA First Team All-American honors in 1976 and was drafted by the Portland Trailblazers
 

Terry Gooley  Greenwood Central High School  Player

Piloted Greenwood Central to consecutive Steuben County League Championships (1980 & 1981) and the 1981 Section V Class D Championship. Tim and Terry each were named to the Section V All-Tournament Team in 1980 and 1981 with Terry being honored as Tournament MVP each year. Upon graduation from Greenwood, Tim and Terry received appointments to the United Sates Air Force Academy where they participated in intercollegiate Tennis for the Falcons.
 

Tim Gooley   Greenwood Central High School   Player

Janitha Knight   Lyons Central High School   Player

A   multi-talented athlete, Janitha was a 2001 graduate of Lyons Central. Set school records for points scored (1858), rebounds (1363) and blocks (291).   She was a four-time Wayne County League All-Star and a two-time All-Greater Rochester honoree (200, 2001).
 

Gary Miller   Newark Central High School  Coach

Coached the Newark Reds to 6 Finger Lakes League titles. Gary’s teams captured back to back Section V Championships in 1978 and 1979. His 1979 squad won the Western Regional title and participated in the NYSPHSAA Final Four. Gary was a three-time Section V Class AA Coach of the Year and two time All-Greater Rochester Coach of the Year including being chosen as the first recipient of the award.
 

Tom Mooney   Greece Arcadia / Athena High School   Coach

Career assistant coach at Greece Arcadia and Greece Athena High Schools. Tom was a staff member of eleven Section V Championship teams. The 1992 team from Athena captured the NYSPHSAA Boys Class AA Championship. He also coached at the intercollegiate level at the University of Rochester, University of Detroit and New Mexico State University.
 

Tom Nowak   Elba Central High School   Coach

Tom Amassed 456 career wins in 26 years at the helm of the Elba Central girls program. His teams captured 13 Genesee Region League Titles and 8 Section V Class D Championships. Tom guided his Lancer squads to 2 Western Regional titles and 2 NYSPHSAA Final Four berths. His 2012 Elba team secured NYSPHSAA State Championship. Tom was honored as AGR Coach of the Year and NYSPHSAA   Coach of the Year in 2012. He was a 19-time recipient of the Section V Class D Coach of the Year Award. Tom was a 2003 inductee of the Section V Football Hall of Fame.
 

Trisha Raniewicz   Our Lady of Mercy High School   Player

A 1999 graduate of Our Lady of Mercy High School, Trisha was one of the most prolific scorers in Section V history. As a senior she averaged a Section V record 31.8 points per game. Her 2,067 career points rank 13th all-time in Section V. Trisha was a four-time All-Greater Rochester selection and the 1999 All-Greater Rochester Player of the Year. She is currently the Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Pepperdine University.
 

John Serafine  Geneva DeSales High School  Player

John was the Finger Lakes League Player of the Year in 1975 and 1976 while leading Geneva DeSales to the league title each year. The 1976 squad lost in the Section V Finals to Rossevelt Bouie’s Kendall team. John was an All-Greater Rochester honoree in 1976 and a member of the Section V All-Tournament team.   After graduation John enrolled at St. Lawrence University where he was an integral part of the Saints basketball program that captured 3 consecutive ICAC titles (1978-1980).
 

Carl Wheat   Brockport Central School District  Official

One of the premier officials in the early years of Section V Girls’ Basketball. Carl officiated in numerous Section V Championship contests in a 17 year career. He also officiated on the collegiate level in the ECAC.
